The UK Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change Amber Rudd confirmed on Thursday that the government will have to introduce new policies for the UK to meet emissions and renewable energy targets.

Rudd was addressing energy and climate change questions in the House of Commons (pictured) and said " accept this government needs to put in place more policies to meet our carbon budgets".

The conservative government recently conceded that the UK is currently on track to miss its 2020 EU renewable energy target and its fourth carbon budget target, and Rudd responded to a series of questions from MPs on the issue.

Ms Rudd, head of the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC), reiterated the government's commitment to meet legally binding targets, but did not respond to calls to provide details on how the government plans achieve the targets.

The Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change also said that there have been concerns about meeting the fourth carbon budget for several years and said that measures for meeting it will be announced in the future.

Rudd insisted that the government does "not rule out carbon capture and storage in the future", despite the cancellation of a £1 billion demonstration funding competition and the Prime Minister David Cameron’s recent suggestion that the technology was not working.

Rudd said the government was continuing to support the research & development of early stage CCS and could deploy the technology in the future.
