Japanese electronics giant Panasonic will begin selling energy storage systems in Australia to take advantage of the boom in solar panel rooftop installations.

Australia reportedly now has over one million homes with solar panels, leading to a growing need for efficient energy storage systems.

Panasonic is due to conduct a feasibility study with Australian power companies including ActewAGL and Red Energy and sales are set to begin in October.

Panasonic will provide lithium-ion batteries with 8kWh storage systems and an output of 2kW designed specifically for the Australian market to store electricity for homes, businesses and utilities.

In a statement, Panasonic said that the systems will enable consumers to store excess electricity from solar panels for use when the sun isn’t shining with the battery systems also serving as a back-up power generator.

According to a recent study from the Grattan Institute in Melbourne, solar panels have been installed on 1.4 million rooftops of homes across Australia since 2001 and consumers are now looking for improvements in cost-efficiency and reduced reliance on the electricity grid.

The Panasonic systems will also be available in New Zealand.
