Australia, along with the US, has refused, until very recently, to sign up to the Kyoto Protocol against the wishes of the majority of Austalians who believe the country should do so. Now, following recent elections, new Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, has promised to ratify immediately eaving the US the only major country not to do so.The Small Island States in the region meanwhile continue to feel the force of climate change with many being no more than a few metres above sea level. These states are acutely aware that just a small rise in sea level could take large percentages of land, potentially losing them prime beach space and seriously affecting the region's economy given most are tourism-dependent.
