About 75 per cent of the total population in Sub-Saharan Africa currently has no access to electricity or any kind of modern energy services. Of the total energy Africa consumes, traditional biomass accounts for 59 per cent, electricity eight per cent, petroleum 25 per cent, coal, four per cent and gas, four per cent. In contrast to its energy consumption, Africa continues to be one of the major regions of the world that suffers most from the effects of climate change, yet with some of the world's poorest nations, is least able to afford mitigation strategies.
