We advise on, design, build, and operate thermal remediation projects from concept to closure.  From our base in Massachusetts, USA, we have performed projects in North and South America, Europe, Asia and Australia for a broad range of corporations and governmental clients.

TerraTherm specializes in using heat and collection/treatment of extracted fluids to clean up highly contaminated soil and sediment.  Contaminant categories that we can treat include Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) including PCBs, Chlorobenzenes, PAHs and Dioxins/Furans; Pesticides; Coal Tar; and Mercury.  A particularly large focus is treatment of Chlorinated Solvent (DNAPL) source areas in soil above and below the water table, and in groundwater.  We have completed 53 field projects over the past 13 years since our founding. 

Each project completed has achieved 100% of the cleanup goals required by the cognizant regulatory agencies.  Projects performed have involved oversight by the following regulatory agencies:  USA: USEPA’s CERCLA and RCRA programs, along with numerous state environmental agencies);  Brazil: State of São Paulo;  Denmark: various regions incl. Region Hovenstaden;  UK: Atomic Energy Authority and CL:AIRE;  Japan: Ministry of Environment; Vietnam: MONRE and MND;  Australia: Environment Protection  Authority, Victoria .

We offer the broadest array of thermal remediation technologies in the industry, including In Situ Thermal Desorption (ISTD), which is the simultaneous application of thermal conduction heating and vacuum extraction; Steam-Enhanced Extraction; Resistive Heating; and combinations of those in situ technologies.  We also offer ex situ thermal remediation in aboveground piles, which we term In-Pile Thermal Desorption (IPTD®).  This range of technology offerings allows us to tailor project designs to specific site conditions, contaminants and goals, using the optimal combination of methods, without bias towards any single technology or approach.

TerraTherm’s services are proven to be highly sustainable when compared with conventional approaches capable of achieving similar cleanup goals, such as excavation/incineration or excavation/landfilling.  We actively work with Life Cycle Analysts to optimize and reduce the environmental, economic and social impacts associated with our work, and have presented and published numerous papers on our Sustainability work at conferences and in technical journals.
