For the third time, Climate Action, in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), showcased the latest sustainable technological innovations and services to an international audience of government officials and environmental professionals at the 12th Special Session of the Governing Council and Global Ministerial Environment Forum (GC/GMEF) of the United Nations Environment Programmeon the 20-22nd February in Nairobi, Kenya.

Held annually, the GC/GMEFis organisedby UNEP and brings together Environment Ministers and senior representatives from over 140 countries to consult and exchange ideas on the key environmental issues on a national and global level.

Nick Nuttall, UNEP Spokesperson opened the Sustainable Innovation Expo reception on Tuesday 21st February and in his address, spoke about the importance of technologies such as those showcased at the event in supporting the global shift towards a Green Economy. He also thanked the exhibitors for attending and engaging with high level delegates and expressed that he would like the event to be even bigger next year, with an even wider range of new technologies.

The Sustainable Innovation Expo showcased innovative technologies (either currently in use or in development stages) from private sector organisationsthat can assist governments in greening infrastructures and economies. These included products that mitigate and adapt to climate change, use natural resources more efficiently, harness sustainable energy and reduce pollution.

The Sustainable Innovation Expo stands featured a range of technologies including: technology to improve the productivity of agriculture whilst reducing environmental impact, portable desalination technology, solar powered water pumping solutions and sustainable energy solutions.

Sula Bruce, Climate Action Project Director said “We are delighted that Nick Nuttall was able to attend our reception. This has been the most successful Sustainable Innovation Expo to date and we look forward to building on this success in years to come”.

For the organisations involved, this was a unique opportunity to present landmark technology and ideas to a key international audience of Environment Ministers, Permanent Secretaries, NGOs and civil society organisations gathering to consult on crucial environmental issues. These discussions are particularly valuable in the lead up to RIO+20 in June and COP18 in December 2012.
