Ealing Council and Greenredeem, the company that rewards people for everyday green actions, yesterday celebrated the one year anniversary of the residents recycling scheme launch.

Over the past 12 months the initiative has helped boost the council’s recycling rates across the borough to 45 per cent.

To celebrate the local achievements, Greenredeem and Ealing Council held a celebratory breakfast at Harris and Hoole, a Greenredeem reward partner.

Attendees from across the borough included Hanwell Honeypots and the London Bike Hub, two local community groups that have been recipients of Greenredeem donations from points donated by local residents signed up to the Greenredeem Scheme.

Greenredeem members also attended the event to celebrate the scheme’s success to date.

Nearly 2.2 million points have been generously donated by local members, to local community projects, which equates to over £10,000 in grants made.

The GPRA were the first community project in the borough to reach its donation goal and benefit from the Residents’ Rewards Scheme. The GPRA received a new oven to allow the community group to offer local teenagers and children cookery lessons with Kiddy Cook.

Councillor Bassam Mahfouz said: “I am delighted that we have been rewarding residents who recycle in Ealing. With more than 23,500 subscribers, the scheme has helped us continue to increase our recycling rates whilst also supporting some fantastic local community groups. I’d encourage others to sign up and get your neighbours to do so too. You can receive personal discounts, support good work in the community and do the right thing for the environment.”

“We’re delighted at the success of the residents reward scheme over the last year. The enthusiasm of the local community to undertake green actions has been outstanding,” said Rob Crumbie at Greenredeem.

“We’re looking forward to continuing to build on this over the coming months and years to further improve the local environment, as well as further help local businesses and community groups.”

About Greenredeem

Greenredeem reward people for taking everyday green actions. Through understanding and collaboration, our vision is to inspire communities to create a better future. Launched in the UK in 2009, Greenredeem works with local authorities and commercial partners to motivate sustainable behaviour change. Primarily, our partnerships motivate residents to recycle more, both at home and on the go.

We understand that reward means different things to different people, and our platform gives the flexibility to choose from personal reward through discounts and offers, to donating points to charities and community projects. Members can even enter our monthly prize draw, or enjoy being part of a community of like-minded people.

With recycling rates in England stagnating, the EU target of a 50% recycling rate by 2020 is becoming even harder to achieve. Greenredeem offers local authorities a rewarding way to kick start recycling on a local level. Having worked with partners that have seen their recycling rates increase by up to 3 times the national average, we are looking forward to implementing our scheme into more local authorities soon.
