As part of the celebrations surrounding the publication of the Living Planet Report, the WWF has just launched the ‘Earth Book 2012’. The project is an ‘online collaborative storybook’ where people share experiences of the natural world. In the run up to the Rio+20 Earth Summit, it is hoped that people will sign or contribute towards the book via the website.
The book allows people to upload pictures or draw their own doodles and covers areas including Urban Nature, Animals, Wild Places, Rivers and Lakes, Oceans and Seas, Weather and Forests. It encourages anyone to contribute, whether that be talking about their local park, or experiences of far flung corners of the world.
The Living Planet Report 2012 has demonstrated the stresses the natural environment is being put under due to demand for resources. The important step now is to make use of the report and ensure that action is taken at the Rio+20.
For example, it findings revealed we require 1.5 Earths to absorb the CO2 we are now producing, nearly 3 billion people are living in areas with severe water shortages, and declines in biodiversity are happening fastest in developing countries. It paints a stark and fast moving pattern of the degradation of the natural environment.
