Enel’s Greek subsidiary Enel Green Power Hellas (EGPH) has started construction on the 154 megawatt (MW) Kafireas wind farm in southern Greece.

The energy group will spend about €300 million ($341 million) for the Kafireas project, Enel said in a press release on Wednesday 28 June.

The wind project – which is considered to be the country’s largest – is located on the island of Evia and is projected to generate around 483 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity annually, enough to power 129,000 households.

In addition, the wind farms output will help offset nearly 433,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions each year.

Operations of the wind farm are expected to begin in the first quarter of 2019 and the power generated will be sold to the Hellenic Electricity Market Operator LAGIE under a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).

Antonio Cammisecra, Head of Global Renewable Energies and CEO of Enel Green Power said: “The start of construction of Kafireas marks a new step for Enel’s presence in Greece, where we have a decade-long experience in the renewables sector.

“With this new facility we are not only committed to providing green and sustainable energy to the country, but also promoting the social and economic development of local communities by adopting the creating shared value approach for the construction and operation of this wind complex,” he added.

At present, EGPH has two operational wind farms, both located in the Karistos municipality, with a combined capacity of 16.5 megawatts (MW).

In total, the company has 308 MW of installed renewable energy capacity in Greece, including wind, solar and hydropower projects.
