United Nations climate officials gathered in the German city of Bonn on Monday for a ten day round of talks on how to implement the Paris Agreement on climate action.

The climate agreement was reached by 195 UN member states in December at the COP21 climate summit and was signed during an Earth Day ceremony in New York on 22 April by 177 countries.

The deal is aimed at curbing greenhouse gas emissions and preventing dangerous levels of global warming.

In a statement on Sunday, Geneva-based environmental campaign group Climate Media said the talks will focus on "how to strengthen the loss and damage mechanism, as well as what lessons can be learnt in regard to non-economic losses.”

The statement from the Climate Media also outlined the need for countries to adopt more stringent measures beyond just adapting to climate change.

The statement added: "The Paris Agreement needs to go beyond mere recognition of the huge need for adaptation support and come up with a concrete plan to identify the source and amount of support immediately.”

The UN negotiations in Bonn (pictured) will run from 16-26 May.
