The UK Environment Agency's "Spotlight on business" report published in September shows that the chemical industry is continuing to improve its environmental performance ahead of many other industry sectors.

The Environment Agency graded 48% of chemical sites with a good A rating for their operator performance in 2006, up from 42 percent in 2005. Over 80% of sites received an A or B rating.

The report indicated that greenhouse gas releases from the chemical sector are down 9% between 2005 and 2006.

Eastman Chemical (UK) Ltd in Workington was highlighted for good practice by saving the equivalent of 1500 tonnes of carbon dioxide by installing two wind turbines at their plant.
