The solar powered aeroplane, Solar Impulse 2, completed the 12th stage of its global circumnavigation attempt on Sunday after landing in the US state of Ohio.

Swiss pilot Andre Borschberg arrived in the city of Dayton at 21:56 local time (01:56 GMT) after a 16 hour flight from Tulsa, Oklahoma, covering 1,113km.

The Solar Impulse team is aiming to arrive in New York in the coming weeks before flying over the Atlantic.

The aeroplane is on its way back to Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates to complete the round-the-world journey that started in March last year.

The plane has 17,000 photovoltaic cells on the top surface of its wings and is completely powered by the sun.
