Prince Charles has been invited to the crucial Paris climate change conference in December by the French government and is set to play a key role in the negotiations.

French Ecology Minister Ségolène Royal visited Prince Charles (pictured) in London this week with a written invitation to the U.N. led summit from President François Hollande.

The 21st Conference of Parties (COP21) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) will run from November 30 – December 11 and a historic global deal is due to be signed by nearly 200 nations.

Royal met the Prince of Wales and heir to the British throne at Clarence House yesterday and reinforced the importance of the summit to the French government.

Royal said: "The Prince of Wales can play a very important role with all the Commonwealth," and she highlighted his "long-running, and so precious, commitment" to environmental causes.

Royal also met the UK’s Environment Minister Amber Ross, and told reporters that the British government was "very committed" to pro-active climate policies and working to ensure that the Paris conference is a success.
