His Holiness Pope Francis, as part of his three-day visit to Kenya, will address the United Nations and Diplomatic community on Thursday at the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON).
Pope Francis's encyclical 'Laudato Si' earlier this year called on the faithful to embrace their responsibilities to the environment, creating global momentum for the Sustainable Development Goals, adopted in September, and the new climate change agreement to be finalised in Paris next month.
During his talk before an audience of thousands at the UN headquarters in Africa, he is expected to touch on many of the issues facing people and planet, including the need to move to low-carbon and less-wasteful societies.
The leader of the Catholic Church will meet Mr. Achim Steiner, Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Dr. Joan Clos, Executive Director of UN-Habitat.and Ms. Sahle-Work Zewde, Director-General of the United Nations Office in Nairobi,
He will plant a tree to mark his visit and serve as a symbol of hope, before touring UNEP's sustainable offices, which are powered largely by solar panels and employ energy efficiency measures.
Pope Francis's first trip to Africa will also take him to Uganda and the Central African Republic. His itinerary includes meetings with Heads of State and religious leaders, masses for the public, and visits to underprivileged and refugee communities.
