North American Toyota hybrid drivers save millions of tonnes of carbon dioxide
New Toyota report outlines progress towards its new 2011 Environmental Action Plan (EAP).
Japanese car manufacturer, Toyota, has just published its 2007 North American Environmental Report highlighting its drive to reduce emissions, save energy and increase recycling and reuse.
As of September 2007, estimates show North American Toyota hybrid drivers had saved over 319 million gallons (1.2 billion litres) of gasoline, and avoided over 2.7 million tonnes of CO2 emissions to the atmosphere.
Toyota remains committed to hybrid technology as a key component for improving fuel efficiency and environmental impact. Every 100 gallons (378 litres) of gasoline not consumed saves nearly a tonne of CO2.
In addition, Toyota claims to have reduced its total energy use at its North American manufacturing operations by 22 per cent since 2002, and has targeted a 27 per cent reduction by 2011 compared to 2002.
Speaking of its commitment to the environment, Senior Vice-President of Toyota Motor North America said, "Toyota's approach to reducing CO2 is far broader than just a commitment to fuel economy standards. …..Our environmental reports show a consistent history of achieving, and in many cases exceeding, our targets. We believe that the combination of actions we are taking will all play a part in meeting the challenges we all face."
Also contained in the report are details of its recycling and resource use where its US parts distribution centres reduced non-regulated waste to landfill by 11 per cent.
In 2007, these centres recycled 89.9 per cent of their waste, almost reaching their 2011 target of 90 per cent.
