Environment ministers from the Nordic region have agreed to address the problem of plastic and microplastics in the world’s oceans.

The new agreement means the Nordic countries will form a partnership on the issue at the upcoming United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-2), to be held in Nairobi, Kenya from 23-27 May.

Denmark’s Environmental and Food Minister, Esben Lunde Larsen, said: “Plastic in the oceans is a massive global problem bereft of simple solutions that requires international co-operation.”

The Nordic partnership is also designed to encourage a strong European position regarding the problem of plastic and microplastics in the world’s oceans.

The group is planning to write to the EU Commission to emphasise the severity of the plastic problem.

Larsen said: “That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be acting ourselves… In Denmark, we are working actively with solutions, such as supporting attempts to cleanse wastewater of micro plastics.”
