New York City is on target to set a new record this year for laying down protected bike lanes in the city.

A campaign last year saw the city lay down more protected bike lanes than any previous year, and city officials are planning to break that record in 2016.

Queens and Brooklyn were targeted  last year for new bike lanes and the plans for 2016 will focus on Manhattan East and West including 1st, 2nd, 6th and Amsterdam Avenues to name a few.

The city is planning to hit the streets with 17.6 miles of protected bike lanes in 2016 with 2.5 miles of construction already in progress.

New York is credited with bringing modern protected bike lanes to the US but critics of the plan have said that the loss of parking and bike traffic would hurt business and cause problems traffic.
