Kochi airport becomes world’s first 100% solar-powered airport

Cochin International Airport, in the Indian city of Kochi, has become the world’s first airport to produce all the power it needs from solar energy.

The airport, in the state of Kerala, introduced a 12-megawatt solar station in partnership with Bosch Limited and the unit will produce 50,000 units (kWh) of power per day.

The unit covers 50 acres and is the largest solar project built for an airport in India.

The new solar power station added to a previous installed capacity of 1.1 MW means that CIAL will become ‘grid power neutral’, according to Bosch.

Dr. Steffen Berns, managing director Bosch Limited, said: “India has the potential to achieve the government’s ambitious target.. by 2022 and Bosch is committed to be a part of this success story.”

The CIAL installation is also the largest project which has been constructed by the Bosch Energy and Building Solutions team in India.

The Indian government has a target of installing 100,000 MW of solar power across the country by 2022.
