Kenya to build 55MW solar plant with Chinese funding

Kenya has approved a new solar power plant that will receive US$126m of investment from China

Kenya has approved a new 55MW solar power plant in the eastern county of Garissa, and the project will receive KES12.8 million (US$126 million) of investment from China.

The Rural Electrification Authority (REA) made the announcement on Monday and the solar park will be financed through concessional funding from the Chinese government.

The REA will install over 210,000 solar panels of 260W capacity each and the project will provide enough power for the equivalent of 625,000 households.

According to the REA, the project will be the largest solar project in East and Central Africa, and will create more than 1,000 jobs.

Construction is due to begin in July this year and is expected to be to completed and connected to the grid within a year.
