Japan has the potential to triple the amount of electricity it gets from renewable sources by 2030, according to a new study from the Ministry of Environment.
Clean energy including from solar, wind, hydro, geothermal and biomass could account for 241 terawatt hours to 356 terawatt hours of electricity by 2030 depending on energy policies.
The estimates are included in the study of renewable energy’s potential published on the ministry website on Friday.
Japan generates about 116 terawatt hours from renewable energy, according to the report, which was compiled by the Mitsubishi Research Institute for the ministry.
Solar output could increase from 15 terawatt hours up to 128 terawatt hours in 15 years, the report found.
Wind energy generation, including offshore, has the potential to rise to 64.6 terawatt hours from 4.8 terawatt hours if the new policies are adopted.
