ITDP promoting sustainable transportation in Nashik, India

The Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) has been working in the city of Nashik in western India for the past few months to promote sustainable and equitable transportation in the region.

ITDP had signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) last month for the latter's technical advice on road and traffic-related issues in the district.

Research has included spot surveys for traffic, the frequency of buses, shared autorickshaws, parking and a pedestrian survey to identify market areas, footpaths and walkability.

Technical director Christopher Cost said that the old city area was congested and lack of proper parking and footpaths was the cause of haphazard traffic. The latest studies aim to identify the causes of traffic issues and will suggest workable solutions.

The new survey also includes the Canada Corner, College road and other areas.

Earlier, on March 3, the NGO had conducted the first survey in the 12 spots of the city to study the road scenario, traffic-related issues and transportation facilities. The NGO also conducted a mobility access survey - a household survey - with the help of 100 students of Nashik Institute of Technology and College of Architecture.
