IKEA launches biggest rooftop solar project in Missouri, U.S
Swedish furniture giant has announced that a new store in St Louis, Missouri will include the largest rooftop solar array in the US state
IKEA has announced that a new store in St Louis, Missouri will include the largest rooftop solar array in the US state.
The Swedish furniture giant said the array will open in September 2015 and will feature 4,085 solar panels, cover 259,000 square feet, and have a capacity of 1.28 MW.
The plant is expected to generate 1.78 GWh for the store annually and is part of IKEA’s ongoing target to source 100 per cent of its energy requirements from renewables.
The new array will generate enough power for the equivalent of 169 homes and will save an estimated 1,227 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions.
According to reports, the new application is the IKEA’s 42nd solar project in the US and means that solar energy has a presence at nearly 90 per cent of the firms US locations, with a total capacity of 40 MW.
IKEA owns and operates each of its solar energy rooftop systems at its sites, instead of a solar lease or power purchase agreement (PPA) being in place.
The company has committed more than $2 billion to invest in renewable energy up to 2020.
