Technology giant HP will use renewable energy to power 100 per cent of its global operations and will reach the 40 per cent renewable electricity mark by 2020.

As part of the California-based company’s efforts to achieve the target, it has joined the RE100 global initiative of major businesses committed to 100 per cent renewable electricity.

Nate Hurst, HP’s chief sustainability and social impact officer said the move would be “both cost-effective and low carbon sources of energy are essential to the future and the growth of HP’s business.”

Led by The Climate Group in partnership with CDP, and including Unilever, Starbucks, and Nike, RE100 works with companies to help them transition to renewable energy sources.

On 1 April, RE100 members Adobe, Ikea, Mars, Google and Microsoft filed court briefs supporting the Obama administration's Clean Power Plan which has faced legal challenges in the Supreme Court.

The plan aims to reduce carbon emissions by 32 per cent by 2030, compared to 2005 levels.
