Australian property group Glenvill unveiled plans for the world’s first “Tesla Town” in Melbourne’s suburb, with the project’s first 60 homes to go on sale this week.

The “Tesla Town” will be located on the outskirts of the Melbourne CBD and will feature new-build homes with rooftop solar and Tesla7kWh lithium-ion Powerwall battery storage as standard design features, as well as electric car recharging points.

The 16.46 hectare suburb will be called YarraBend as it is located in front of the Yarra River, and there will be around 2,500 new various types of accommodations ranging in price from $1.48 million to $2.1 million.

A special YarraBend app will connect the inhabitants, and allow them to stay informed of the community information such as public transport timetables, home delivery menus, carpooling arrangements and social events.

The number of Powerwalls batteries installed in the special suburb could amount to more than a thousand of them, but more information will be displayed by Glenvill later on the topic.

The project is one of the most sustainable developments in Australia thanks to 43 per cent water reduction, 80 per cent landfill reduction and a potential 34 per cent reduction of energy use, according to Danni Addison, the Victorian chief executive of the Urban Development Institute of Australia, which developed the Ecologically Sustainable Development rating system

Addison said: “The Powerwalls, combined with solar panels (also standard), will mean that future residents will be able to benefit in a variety of ways, including dramatically smaller power bills and knowing that the majority of their energy usage is coming from a clean and renewable source.”

She added: “The electric car charging points will be another available option... Combined with the Powerwall and solar panels, it is likely that ‘refuelling’ future residents’ electric cars will be free.”

Contract signing for the houses should start next August and the first residents should be able to move in by the end of 2017.
