Cuba has become the 173rd state to submit a national climate plan to the United Nations as part of international efforts to agree a global deal at the COP21 climate summit in Paris next month.

UN member states have been asked by the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to submit plans to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the build up to the Paris meeting as part of a proposed historic climate deal designed to limit catastrophic global warming.

This Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs) will be assessed at the UN Climate Change Conference that is running from 30 November to 11 December in the French capital.

The INDCs are available on the UNFCCC website and 173 states have now formally submitted their plans.

The proposed Paris agreement will come into effect in 2020, empowering all countries to act to prevent average global temperatures rising above 2 degrees Celsius and to take advantage of a transition to low-carbon economy.

Christiana Figueres, Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC, is encouraging countries to submit their INDCs in advance of COP21, underlining their commitment and support of the summit.
