Fashion industry coalition signs up for sustainability
01/03/2011 – A group of apparel and footwear brands, retailers, NGOs, academics and the U.S. EPA have launched the Sustainable Apparel Coalition to reduce the social and environmental impacts of the fashion industry. Brands including Nike, Gap and H&M have signed up. The coalition hopes to produce an industry-wide index of product sustainability.

Kellogg’s flakes toward sustainable palm oil
03/03/2011 – Kellogg Company announced that all its palm oil use would be certified through GreenPalm, which helps fund sustainable production. Once a “financially and logistically feasible” supply becomes available, Kellogg’s hope to source all the ingredients sustainably. GreenPalm encourage sustainable farming but work around the problem of palm oil’s intermingled production process.

Public-private solar energy to power 85,000 homes
02/03/2011 – The LA Department of Water and Power has teamed up with SolarWorld to set up an 11.6 MW solar array that will avert 290,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions over a quarter of a century. Work has already begun on the system, which will be sited 65 miles north of the city on a 42-acre site.

Sustainability firm leads on water-footprint database
03/03/2011 – Quantis, a life cycle and sustainability analyst, is assisting a consortium of multinationals, including Kraft and Unilever, to develop a database of water footprints from various manufacturing sectors. This will eventually give companies a comprehensive view of their water footprint so the impacts of their water use can be reduced.

02/03/2011 - A new search engine, Envirosearch.org - powered by Microsoft’s Bing, allows users to raise money for international conservation projects when they search online. A collaboration of environmental organisations including Carbonfund.org is behind the project and Yahoo! adverts will generate the revenue that will initially go into tree-planting projects in Haiti, India and the U.S..
Recolight celebrates recycling 100 million lamps
02/03/2011 - Specialist WEEE compliance scheme Recolight announced that it had funded the recycling of 100 million low energy bulbs since 2007. According to the company, this prevented a third of a tonne of mercury from entering landfill. Recolight help lamp producers comply with regulations and offer 1,000 recycling points in the UK.
