  • The effectiveness of low-carbon technologies will be put to the test soon with the opening of a new carbon measurement centre in the UK. The idea is to test and validate the performance of certain low carbon technologies, enabling developers to scale up their designs more quickly. The Centre for Carbon Measurement (CCM) will be set up by the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) and cover areas such as quality of climate data, the development of carbon trading techniques as well as developing low carbon technologies.

The effectiveness of low-carbon technologies will be put to the test soon with the opening of a new carbon measurement centre in the UK.

Approval from the CCM will act as an independent stamp of approval and help to drive forward the best low-carbon products. It will also enable a comparison of technologies against regulations, and allow cross comparison of the effectiveness of different products.

Working with climate scientists will be an important way in which to improve modelling techniques, the consistency and accuracy of climate data and as a result improve policy -according to the NPL, which has been pushing for the creation of the centre for some time.

This is an important announcement as independent verification is essential in building up widespread trust in the field of climate and low-carbon science, the reputation of which having been damaged by the climategate scandal and sceptical media.
