The Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) and the Carbon War Room (CWR) will form a new partnership to promote 'market-based solutions' to climate change.

The alliance between two of the world's leading sustainability focused non-profit organisations will see the two form a unified legal entity with a single board of trustees, chaired by current CWR president José Maria Figueres.

Both organisations will maintain their own brand names, however, and will keep their respective offices in Colorado, New York and Washington.

CWR was founded five years ago by Sir Richard Branson with the aim of identifying the market failures that have exacerbated climate change and exploring how new technologies and business models can rectify the issues.

Branson explained that combining the CWR with a think tank with over 30 years experience tackling similar issues would provide a boost to both organisations.

In a statement Branson said:"For the past five years, CWR has punched well above its weight, leveraging the creativity and convening power of fellow entrepreneurs to solve the climate challenge. By marrying RMI's analytical rigour and energy-system expertise with CWR's bold and agile entrepreneurial approach we can go further, faster."

Amory Lovins, RMI co-founder, said: “For more than 32 years, RMI had partnered with industry and business with significant successes in transforming energy use across the transportation, buildings, industrial and electricity sectors. Now, we can capitalise on CWR's proven ability to engage and excite corporate executives, entrepreneurs and investors to rally round innovative ideas and take action."
