California to sign landmark climate deal
California Governor Jerry Brown will sign a deal on Wednesday to increase renewable electricity use to 50% and double the energy efficiency of buildings
California Governor Jerry Brown is due to sign an ambitious deal on Wednesday to increase the state’s renewable electricity use to 50 per cent and double the energy efficiency of existing buildings by 2030.
In September, Brown (pictured) said: "We have the technological means and now we have the legal mandate to reduce carbon pollution."
Brown launched a proposal at the beginning of 2015 for California to set the most aggressive greenhouse-gas emissions benchmark in North America.
California is already on target to generate a third of its electricity from renewable sources by 2020.
The final bill that the Governor is due to sign on Wednesday defers to state regulators to implement the programmes to increase renewable electricity use and double energy efficiency in existing buildings.
