BMW has signed an agreement with energy company Bio2Watt to provide BMW’s manufacturing plant with renewable energy, in Rosslyn, Pretoria, in the first bio-gas electricity project of its kind.

Bronkhorstspruit Biogas Plant, which is located on one of South Africa’s largest feedlots, will provide BMW with an installed capacity of 4.4 megawatts.

The feedlots are equipped with grid access, essential fuel supplies as well as sufficient water supplies from a storm water collection dam.

According to a statement made by BMW SA: “Converting organic waste into electrical energy is a well proved technology that has gained further traction worldwide as the swing to renewable energy alternatives gains momentum, and becomes price-competitive with base forms of energy generation,”

Tim Abbott, Managing Director of BMW SA, said their focus was to succeed in achieving a complete carbon neutral energy supply and become a leader in the renewable energy operation by 2020.

BMW’s Group’s ‘CleanProduction’ initiative was founded in 2006 and aims to maximise production efficiency and reduce energy consumption at all of the companies manufacturing plants around the world.

The project is expected to commence in the first quarter of 2015.

The Chief Executive of Bio2Watt, Sean Thomas, has stated that the scheme will convert wasted energy such as cow manure, food abattoir and dairy waste and into sustainable electricity.
