Basel Action Network launches e-waste app
Environmental supervisory body BAN launches app to measure positive environmental impacts and manage electronic waste
The environmental supervisory body Basel Action Network (BAN) has launched a new mobile application that will measure the positive environmental impacts of using e-Stewards Certified Recyclers to manage electronic waste.
E-Stewards Certification is the only standard that prohibits the export of toxic e-waste to developing countries, the child labor, and the deposit of toxic e-waste in municipal landfills or incinerators.
It is also recognised for ensuring that recycling workers are protected from toxic exposure.
The e-Stewards Global Impact Calculator app is available for free on the Apple Store and provides metrics of sustainability for reducing greenhouse gases emissions; diverting toxic metals from landfill or global dumping; and recovering precious metals.
After discovering that 80 per cent of recyclable e-waste is not recovered and reused, but is loaded onto container ships and deposited in Africa and China, BAN created an ethical recycling system through the e-steward’s scheme.
Jim Puckett, the director of BAN, said the app provides recyclers with a way to demonstrate to client’s ways they are making a difference towards sustainability by using e-Stewards recyclers.
