Australia installed 100 megawatts of rooftop solar energy capacity in the first two months of 2016 and the state of Victoria has overtaken New South Wales as the country’s second biggest market.

The 55 megawatts installed in February represented a fall from last year figures, with Queensland falling nearly 20 per cent, according to Green Energy Markets.

The Queensland state Labor government was aiming to accelerate the development of rooftop solar power and more than double the number of homes with rooftop installations to one million by 2020.

Victoria has overtaken NSW and is on course to overtake the Queensland market, while Western Australia, Tasmania and the ACT also recorded strong growth compared to 2015.

NSW remained the biggest market for commercial solar power, accounting for more than 25 per cent of the 23 megawatts installed across the country in January and February.

Victoria remains the biggest market for solar power hot water systems, with nearly one third of the 7,106 systems installed so far in 2016.
