Developing countries could soon see funding and joint research for climate change issues that the region is currently facing. Former member of the House of Councillors and former minister of foreign affairs of Japan Yoriko Kawaguchi, speaking at the forum yesterday, said Japan, Britain and the US were working on a “new financial proposal” for such a programme.
The Cool Earth Partnership programme would aid developing countries in “adaptation” to and “mitigation” of climate change. Among aspects being considered is joint development of environmental technologies with developing countries
Climate change was an increasingly pressing issue for the region as certain countries in the Pacific would literally be under water as sea levels rose, she said, adding: “So we think that this is an important issue.” Japan has among the most efficient energy use in the world with energy consumption per gross domestic product half that of the US and one-ninth that of China.
