The sixth edition of 'Climate Action' will be launched alongside the COP 18 negotiations in Doha, Qatar in November and several high level authors have already been confirmed.
The publication was first launched in Bali for COP13 as a platform for governments, industry, international opinion leaders, distinguished academics and environmentalists to debate the business case for climate change solutions. The publication provides concrete steps that both governments and businesses can take to reduce carbon footprints through ongoing dialogue and dedicated actions.
'Climate Action' is produced in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme and their distinguished Executive Director, Achim Steiner, will be writing an introductory article in the upcoming edition. Steiner, also Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations, has been at the forefront of initiatives including the 'Climate and Clean Air Coalition' which works to reduce black carbon and methane emissions. Under his leadership UNEP have spearheaded projects in sustainable water management, clean energy and transport and have promoted the Green Economy effectively.
The Republic of Korea's Environment Minister from 2008-2011, Mr. Lee Maan-ee, will also be writing an article for 'Climate Action'. During Mr. Lee's tenure at the Ministry South Korea became a global leader in environmental policies and they have maintained this position. Under his leadership the Ministry instituted Green House Gas inventory protocols and has reduced GHG emissions significantly through various initiatives including greener transport, green building projects, waste management and the mitigation and control of air pollutants. Waste to energy projects have been a particular focus in the country and it is expected that GHG emissions will be reduced by 35,000 tonnes a year through these projects.
As the COP 18 meetings will be held in Qatar later this year it is appropriate and topical to have such an esteemed author as Dr. Rabi Mohtar. Dr. Mohtar is Executive Director at Qatar Environment and Energy Institute (QEERI) which is a Qatar Foundation initiative. The Foundation is a non-profit organisation and supports Qatari society, business, industry and government in unlocking the countries potential. QEERI functions as a research branch of the Foundation and cooperates with the public and private sectors as well as universities in conducting pioneering research. Focus areas include solar desalination, desertification and other renewable energy sources and the Institute has been instrumental in devising the Air Quality Management System (AQMS).
The articles promise to be fascinating, topical insights into current environmental issues and the publication will offer concrete solutions in the struggle to mitigate and adapt to climate change.
