ABB has won a $20 million order to expand a key solar park in Dubai to 200 MW and the project is expected to offset 250,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions annually.

The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has placed the order with Zurich-based ABB and the company will work on the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park to double the installed capacity of the project from 100 MW.

The project is scheduled to be completed in 2016 and DEWA is reportedly planning to invest billions of dollars into the solar park.

The project is expected to meet energy demands of an estimated 30,000 homes in Dubai (pictured).

DEWA has increased its target for installed capacity at the solar park from an initial 1 GW by 2019, to 3 GW by 2030.

ABB will supply key components including 3 bays of 400 kilovolt and 11 bays of compact 132 kV gas-insulated switchgear (GIS), power transformers, and IEC 61850-based open architecture automation and controls.

Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park is central to Dubai’s target of sourcing 7 per cent of the states total energy use from renewables by 2020 and 15 per cent by 2030.
