A monthly report by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) on global temperatures has found that 2015 is set to be the hottest on record.

The new findings show that May will be the hottest in 136-years, 0.87°C above the 20th century average of 14.8°C, surpassing the previous record set last year by 0.08°C.

It is also the hottest March–May spring period ever recorded, at 0.85°C above the 20th century average of 13.7°C, with the previous record set in 2010.

The NOAA report found that it was also the hottest January-May ever at 0.85°C above the 20th century average.

The report says that “2010 was the last year with El Niño conditions; however El Niño was ending at this point in 2010, while it appears to be maturing at the same point in 2015.”

El Niños create regional warming which adds to the underlying global warming trend, leading to records.
