The contribution of the food chain as a whole to climate changing GHG emissions has been estimated to be as high as 20-22 per cent and it is through this food supply chain that the industry will most likely look to reduce its carbon impact. This will include a focus on agricultural practices, land use changes, manufacturing, refrigeration and food preserving, transportation, packaging, retail, and finally through to waste. With projections of a global population reaching nine billion by 2050, it will be a challenge to prevent emissions rising as the food and agriculture industry works to produce enough food to feed the burgeoning population.
