Climate Action - Assisting business towards carbon neutrality

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the voice for the environment in the United Nations system with a key role to play in a broad range of activities related to understanding, mitigating and adapting to climate change.  The organisation works closely with the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) on outreach and is assisting countries to benefit fully from the various mechanisms of the Kyoto Protocol. UNEP is an implementing partner of the Global Environment Facility, which has climate change mitigation and adaptation as one of its focal areas. UNEP also supports clean and renewable energy projects throughout the developing world and is helping countries to develop national adaptation plans.

Climate Action is produced in close consultation with UNEP's Division of Communications which is based at its headquarters in Nairobi, as well as the Division of Technology, Industry, and Economics (DTIE) in Paris.

UNEP DTIE encourages decision makers in government, local authorities and industry to develop and implement policies, strategies and practices that are cleaner and safer, make efficient use of natural resources, ensure environmentally sound management of chemicals, reduce pollution and risks for humans and the environment, enable implementation of conventions and international agreements, and incorporate environmental costs.

The UNEP DTIE strategy is to influence informed decision making through partnerships with other international organizations, governmental authorities, business and industry, and nongovernmental organisations; support implementation of conventions; and build capacity in developing countries.
